My friends always thought which ever cost the most should be faster in gaming (the workstation cards are real expensive) but in the long run are not better gaming cards. When you read up on both cards you will find that the equivalent workstation counterpart to the desktop will perform worse in gaming (sometimes will not work at all) but run those special 3D software applications faster. You have to keep in mind that your regular drivers are made for gaming while workstation video cards drivers are made for 3D software applications (for example Autocad). They owned workstation Nvidia cards and were mad that drivers were not coming out as fast as the Desktop versions. I don't suppose anybody knows what exactly it checks for (if it does in fact check for something)? I'll play around with it when I get some more free time but I'm a bit out of my element here.I remember this (was some time ago when most of my friends and my self were on Nvidia). I've only spent a few minutes messing around but it seems like there's some check point in the installer to decide which version of control center to use (and it's not simply checking the device ID of the video card like many of the other install options appear to do). Several of the ini files as well as the installer packages differentiate between the regular version of control center and a FirePro version. Stability is my top priority so I'd prefer to use the FirePro driver if the FirePro driver is in fact getting installed.Ĭlick to expand.I did get the version of control center that was packaged with the FirePro driver to install (as opposed to installing it from the regular driver package separately) but I'm thinking it comes packaged with both versions and withheld the FirePro options from my install (I don't see anything specifically labeled with "FirePro" anywhere). I'm tying to decide on which driver I should use. Aside from Siemens, the results are all pretty close to an actual W9100.ĭoes anybody know of any physical differences between the 290x and W9100 (aside from the difference in memory)? I would imagine the W9100 cards are binned better but aside from that, I'm not really sure. if I got the FirePro drivers to install on my system then I know I'm running the FirePro driver, correct)? I'm curious as to the cause of the poor results in Siemens NX with both drivers (the W9100 gets around 4x the performance). I didn't have time to pay much attention to image quality but has anybody else noticed anything significant?ĪMD doesn't have the regular gaming drivers packaged in with the FirePro drivers do they (i.e. I know workstation drivers can improve image quality quite a bit as well. However, I don't think SPECviewperf tells the full story. I ran SPECviewperf on my 290x using both the regular drivers and the FirePro drivers.Īs far as FPS and SPECviewperf are concerned, the difference seems to be pretty insignificant.
